ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIPSA happy and relaxed team arrived back in South Africa yesterday after having competed somewhat successfully in the Atlantic Championships (previously Atlantic Rim) Thirteen Countries make up the field for this event (previously it was only ladies) from countries on the rim of the Atlantic. The only two major countries not eligible are Australia and New Zealand. The ladies achieved Gold in the Singles after a sterling performance from Colleen Webb. The ladies fours team skipped by Lorna Trigwell and consisting of Cheryl Cox, Loraine Victor, and Sylvia Burns were pipped at the post and came home with silver having lost the final by one shot. The pairs and fours having previously lost in the quarter finals. The men’s fours skipped by Gerry Baker with Billy Radloff, Clinton Roets and Handre Marais (reserve for Brian Dixon junior, who was injured prior to the team leaving)) achieved a meritorious gold. Wayne Perry, who was moved to play the singles when Brian withdrew, was having a strong run only to be beaten in the quarter finals. As with the girls the men’s trips and pairs reached the quarter finals. The overall result saw the ladies finish second, Scotland winning gold and Israel Bronze. In the men’s we finished third with Wales winning gold and Jersey silver. Our sincere congratulations to a team of men and women that continued to enable us to hold our heads up high in the world arena and certainly auger well for World Bowls in January next year.
